Ten Camping Tips for an Unforgettable Trip

By Victoria Robillard - Publisher July 3, 2018

I grew up camping. My family went at least once every summer, but many years we went three or four times.  I love sitting in nature doing nothing. I love the way pancakes taste cooked on a camp stove. I love the way rain sounds on a tent. I love that  I get to share camping with my children.

Two summers ago was the first time my husband and I took our kids camping. We went with a group of friends and had an amazing time! Tomorrow we are leaving for our first camping trip of the season and we can not be more excited!

I have compiled a short list of tips for camping. If it is your first time or your fiftieth time. If you are deep in the woods or in your own backyard your family can make memories that last a lifetime.

  1. Do your research! Find out about the campground or the site where you are hoping to stay. Are the bathrooms clean; do they even have bathrooms? The term camping spans a large spectrum. Make sure you aren't surprised about what it means to the place you choose.
  2. Make a list and check it twice. The National Wildlife Federation has a great checklist you can use as your starting point when you are thinking about packing for camping.
  3. Leave electronics at home. They might not work at the campsite instead, bring a deck of cards or a board game to play as a family.
  4. Be kind and respectful of your neighbors, both nearby campers, and local animals.
  5. Follow the Leave No Trace Rule! Do not leave trash or anything that would indicate that you had spent a few nights.
  6. Do it with friends. Camping can be so much more fun when you go with friends. Friends who camp together stay together.
  7. Do it alone. Camping can be relaxing by yourself or with just your family. A great way to reconnect without distractions.
  8. Try something new. Try a new camping spot or a new food or just try camping
  9. Don't forget the marshmallows. Last summer we put bacon on our s'mores after breakfast one morning. I don't think I could eat a regular s'more again!
  10. HAVE FUN! The most important part of any camping trip.

Camping can seem overwhelming but it doesn't have to be. Start small like your own backyard or local campground just for a night or two. You can work your way up to weeklong adventures.
