Book Review: Don't Forget Dexter by Lindsay Ward

By Victoria Robillard - Publisher January 10, 2018

Have you ever worried that you have been forgotten? Or, has a precious best friend ever been lost? Lindsay Ward, author and illustrator of many children’s books including her 2013 book Please Bring Balloons, which was produced by the New York Children’s theater in 2017, brings us Dexter the Dinosaur in his debut book of the new Dexter the Dinosaur series. Our lovable dinosaur finds himself abandoned in the waiting room of the doctor’s office. His best friend Jack was just there and now is nowhere to be found. Dexter is alone, aside from an unhelpful spectator, as he searches for his best friend Jack.

This book is filled with beautifully simplistic drawings and words that move across the page to give the reader a sense of what Dexter the Dinosaur is feeling. Most children who have a favorite stuffed animal know the stress that Dexter must feel when he finds himself alone. We loved the way Dexter devised a plan and worked to find his friend while he became more and more scared. By the end of the book, my kids were singing along with Dexter's theme song (and they haven't stopped since). The book grabbed the attention of both my kids (6 and 3), which can be a challenge when it comes to choosing books. We are looking forward to reading more about Dexter the Dinosaur as the series continues.
