Book Review: The Snowflake Sisters

By Victoria Robillard - Publisher January 17, 2018

Last week Jack and I visited the Manomet Branch Library and found the book The Snowflake Sisters written by former children's poet laureate J. Patrick Lewis. I was instantly in love. I enjoy the art of collage and the illustrations by Lisa Desimini are a beautiful example of the power of collage. Christmas might be over but this book is beautiful year round.

The two sisters, Crystal and Ivory, are on a great adventure. They drift by children trying to catch the first snow of the season with their tongues. They meet a Jolly Old Man with an important job to do. They watch the ball drop over Time Square and they befriend a snowman. Too soon winter fades, spring blooms and the snowflakes begin to melt away. But there is no reason to be sad. The two little snowflakes will be back next winter.

This book got good reviews from everyone in my house. I love to read books that flow, especially at bedtime. This poem is smooth and soothing, which allows the listener to relax with the flow of the spoken word. The collage pages give the book a unique feel. Every time you look at the page you see something new. I could spend hours just looking at the pages of the book.

The Snowflake Sisters was published in 2003 by Antheneum Books for Young Readers. We borrowed it from the Manomet Branch Library which is part of the Old Colony Library Network
