Abilities Rec - Fun for All

Dreams can come true

By Victoria Robillard - Publisher January 17, 2018

Sometimes you are lucky enough to see a dream coming true. If you visit Abilities Rec in the Kingston Collection, that is exactly what you will see.

Abilities Rec opened its doors in late 2017 after years of dreaming by the partnership of Jamie and Kevin Sousa. Jamie, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, has worked in the field of Special Education for many years. Through her work, she realized that there are countless play places and fitness centers, yet none of them truly met the needs of children, adolescents, and adults with Autism and other disabilities. Since before the doors opened to their facility in the Kingston Collection, Abilities Rec has worked to "provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals of all ages and all abilities come to socialize and engage in a wide variety of recreational activities."

Jamie and Kevin live with a passion that is evident in every aspect of Abilities Rec. You enter into a beautiful open gym area where they offer many classes. People of all ages and abilities can partake in classes like Drums Alive - a fitness, health, and wellness program that is based on years of research on "Brain & Body" workout. Or Hippity-Hop Jumping Jam, which in the few months they have been open, their members have made great strides in their core strength and ability to balance. You can find all their classes listed on our Macaroni Kid Calendar and on their website.

Abilities Rec has a state of the art multi-sensory integration room. This beautiful space gives individuals of all ages and abilities the chance to "activate and engage as well as calm and self-regulate their minds and bodies." Their services go beyond just that of a fitness center or play space. They also offer Birthday Party packages, private classes and they will even bring the experience to you.

Jamie and Kevin are not the only ones with the passion. They have worked hard to add the most dedicated coaches to their staff. Coaches who have experience working with individuals with disabilities and are trained in the use of proactive behavior-management techniques.

Visiting with Jamie and Kevin was a wonderful experience. Their passion and true love of their mission shines through every inch of Abilities Rec and I see great things in their future.
