🎶Nurturing Your Child's Creative Seeds

Tips for growing your child's love of music and the arts

By Su D’Ambrosio, Director of Creative Seeds Studio May 9, 2021

Many people believe that success in the arts is dependent on talent. You either “have it” or… you  don’t. While natural aptitude can be a factor, there are many ways parents can foster success in the arts  for their children. Exposing them to lots of different kinds of music and instruments, seeing live and  recorded performances, and encouraging music, dance and drama play at home can water the seeds of  creativity that live inside us all. Most importantly, seeing you enjoying music, dance, and drama  motivates your child to explore and fall in love with the arts.

This is a guiding principal of Creative Seeds Studio. CSS is founded on the concept that children learn  by participating in and experiencing concepts in their body. By actively singing, dancing, playing  instruments and participating in the creative process, students achieve true understanding, and master  the creative seeds skills that are planted and primed for growth and development.

Our classes provide opportunities for young children to play, explore, and learn about music and drama through singing,  movement, rhythm play, stories and theatrical play. Each theme-focused session introduces music  literacy and pre-reading skills by exploring rhyming, patterning and selected picture books. Drama classes focus on spatial awareness, vocal expression and character development through fun games and  imaginative play, and culminate with an online presentation of a story, complete with costumes and  props from home.

In family classes, the vital role of parents and families is honored and encouraged.  Parents and caregivers are given tools and tips to utilize the creative process at home, integrate arts into  their daily lives, and cultivate their children’s “creative seeds.”

Ultimately, success in the arts depends on practice. The more time you spend doing any activity, the  better you get at it. The better you get, the more joy you experience, which motivates more time  practicing, and the cycle continues. If your child has a joyful introduction to the arts, and spends play  time exploring the arts, they will develop an intrinsic sense of reward that will motivate more play and  exploration which results in organic skill development. No special talent required!

Just like seeds that require a variety of nutrients: good soil, water, sunlight, fertilizer… you can  influence your child’s creative growth by providing a variety of arts experiences: listening to music,  attending concerts, family dance parties, puppets, a dress-up box, singing… there are a million  possibilities!

Attending a class with a skilled teacher can supplement your in-home experience by  helping you discover additional resources and helping your child develop their skills to their fullest  potential. Early childhood is the perfect time to lay the foundation, plant and nurture the seeds, and  watch them grow!
