Last week while covering my hair with more dry shampoo, gearing up for another day of Zoom meetings, I received a call from the dentist saying they had an opening if I wanted to come in that day. Hearing the confusion in my voice, the receptionist kindly reminded me that my husband had made the appointment and added me to the cancellation list.

While my initial reaction to this was almost to feel like a failure, instead I breathed a sigh of relief. Like many moms, I often feel it is my sole responsibility to take on the role of making the appointments, maintaining our calendar, and making sure all of the day-to-day tasks around the house are complete. This is the role of the CEO of the home, making sure the trains are running and the fridge is full. This can be empowering and fuels our sense of accomplishment as a parent, but is often also unsustainable.

Let me be clear - my husband has always been a partner in our relationship and parenting. He is the cook, our financial manager, and an incredible father. And because I know he is this incredible, I realized I had to release some more things over to him. As CEO of our home, I have realized this does not mean controlling all the things, but instead, making sure everything is done, and not necessarily by me. Because he has greater time and interest in watching our accounts and knowing where our finances are going, I have changed many of the passwords to our accounts over to my husband. Doing so has given a different perspective on how we spend our resources and where we could invest more wisely.

This balance has allowed me to take a wider lens on things like the value of our home. As a licensed real estate agent, I too often see buyers and sellers unprepared to know either what they can afford, or what equity they have in their home. My goal each month is to provide others with tools and tricks to maximize their time and dollar so they can enjoy more time at home with those they love the most.
