I recently had a friend say to me “I didn’t survive a global pandemic to deal with the same drama of 2019.”

And we laughed when we realized how many things this applied to. We didn’t survive a global pandemic to spend two hours commuting to a job that is not fulfilling, to spend more time cleaning the bathroom than with your children, or to not have dessert.

Really, these questions come down to value; how we value our time and finding worthy avenues to which we can direct our energy. While the pandemic may be shifting with a “new normal” emerging, we also need to continue to prioritize our time - for ourselves and our wallets.

Here’s how I prioritize:

1. Do something fulfilling each day - Each of us has at least one thing that makes us feel fulfilled. It may be reading or journaling, calling a friend, or being active. Once you give priority to this thing - whether the beginning, middle, or end of the day - your energy will rise, and everything else flows from that.

2. Focus on personal strengths - Apparently I don’t know how to load the dishwasher. That’s great because I don’t care how it’s done. But I do enjoy keeping our closets and storage cleaned and organized. My brain has a running tab of where things are and when we will need to stock up so I spend my time here making sure things are accounted for. Utilizing our skills saves us time, money, and most importantly stress of taking on things we don’t enjoy.

3. Value time appropriately - There is only so much time in one day. Whether it is your full-time job or a side-hustle, consider your working “rate.” When thinking of growing your business or taking on a new client, consider how much time it will cost and whether you will be compensated appropriately  or grow in a meaningful way from that experience. If the answer is no, it may not be worth taking on. Your time could be better spent on learning a new skill, or simply enjoying time “off.”

When you are faced with a value proposition, don’t simply tell yourself “well it has to get done.” Instead, ask yourself “does it need to get done by me” and “is it worth my time to get done?” If you are answering no to one or both of those questions, you know it may not be a valuable use of your time. This is when delegation or off-loading comes in. There are many strategies for this that are unique to our individual scenarios but by starting with these questions we move ourselves closer to our worth!
