I was recently asked on Instagram for some recommendations of children's books about women's rights. I racked my brain a bit about how I would approach this with students and my own children, and decided the best way to learn about these topics is by example.
We all know that the best way to empower young women is to show them examples of and teach them about empowered women. But, as a mom of two boys, I know I also have an obligation (maybe even more so!) to read about and see strong women represented. Therefore, this list is made up primarily of biographies about empowered and brave women.
Anytime I am faced with challenging times, I know I cope best by learning more. Usually, I dive into podcasts, books, Google, and even reputable sources on social media to learn more. In my experience, children cope best in the same way - when they feel more empowered.
So, here's a list of great picture books to read with kids about strong women and women activists. The generation growing up in our country will need to be champions of women's rights, so let's empower them now!

Change Sings: A Children's Anthem: Okay, this may not be a biography, but it needed to be on this list. It is beautifully written, the illustrations are gorgeous, and it will empower and motivate even the youngest readers! |
