5 Games to Play that Don't include Electronics

Perfect for waiting at restaurants

My family enjoys going out to eat together. I find that we all seem to stay at the table longer talking and enjoying our time together when we are out. But my kids are still young and sometimes it is difficult for them to wait for the food to arrive at the table. We are always looking for things to entertain the kids without relying on our phones or electronic devices. With the help of my kids, I have compiled a list of some fun games to play in which all you need is a pen and some paper.

1. Hangman: Remember playing this as a kid at school? When your kids are old enough to know and read simple words you can start but it is something they will still enjoy when they are a little older. Extra points if you secretly use their spelling list words of the week. Now, in all honesty, I find the hanging part of this game kind of morbid and my kids are still young so I just draw a man, sometimes we even play with drawing a flower (my daughter's idea) but you can play the traditional way too.

2. Rock Paper Scissors: Move the water glasses out of the way before you start this game, which is a favorite of both my three-year-old and six-year-old. This simple game is played with only your hands so no need to worry if you can't find a pen. Just remember Rock crushes Scissors, Scissors cut Paper and Paper covers Rock. We have also found a really cute book about this game called The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt from The Day the Crayons Quit.

3. Finish my picture: This is a game that my parents created when I was a kid and we would be waiting at a restaurant before they even had the option of handing me a phone. The first player draws a line, squiggle or series of lines and the second player has to turn that line into a picture of something. It is fun and simple but really gets the creative juices flowing.

4.PictionaryWe love playing Pictionary at home but you don't have to carry the box around to still have fun. We simply just draw pictures and have the other people around the table try to guess what we are drawing.

5. What's missing?: This is my daughters favorite game. You need a napkin and little things found around the table or in pockets. Lay out all the items you have collected and ask everyone at the table to look at the items. Then you place the napkin over the items and secretly remove something from your collection. Remove the napkin and have everyone guess what is missing.

Often my kids are having so much fun playing these games that they are disappointed when our food does arrive.
