Get Your Family Outside for Free or Cheap

Massachusetts State Parks from Mountains to Beaches

By Victoria Robillard - Publisher May 16, 2018

Massachusetts State Park system offers everything an outdoor enthusiast could want. From beaches to mountains to everything in between. And while some of the parks do charge a parking fee most of the parks are free and many libraries have a ParkPass to borrow.

I have worked to compile a list of the 10  best state parks for families within driving distance and what they have to offer. Mass State Parkes have over 200 Properties and each one offers a unique experience. These are my top parks but I would love to hear which state parks make your list. You can find the entire list of Mass State Parks and what they offer here.

1. Miles Standish State Forest - Located in Carver and Plymouth Myles Standish State Forest is the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts. The state forest offers year-round activities. There are beaches, campsites and over 13 miles of trails to bike or hike.

2. Pilgrim Memorial State Park - Located at the Plymouth waterfront Pilgrim Memorial State Park is home to what might be the most famous rock in the United States. It is a great place to walk along the waterfront and enjoy one of their many educational programs.

3. Blue Hills Reservations - Covering over 7,000 acres over parts of Quincy, Braintree, Canton, Dedham, Milton, and Randolph, there are over 125 miles of trails with many of them having great views of Boston.

4. Borderland State Park - Borderland State Park might be my favorite State Park. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, disc golf and if you hit it right tours of a historic mansion. Located in North Easton this picturesque park is the perfect place to spend the day.

5. Wompatuck State Park -  I have spent many days biking and running the trails of Wompatuck State Park in Hingham. Many of the paths are paved, making it a great option for young bike riders.

6. Webb Memorial State Park - This Peninsula extends about a half mile into Hingham Bay. It is a great spot for picnics and walking. This state park is the perfect length for my kid's little legs.

7. Walden Pond State Reservation - This famous pond inspired Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Here you can enjoy a dip in the 102-foot deep pond created by a melted glacier or visit a replica of Thoreau's single room cabin.

8. Purgatory Chasm State Reservation - Located a bit of a drive away in Sutton is Purgatory Chasm. If your kids love to climb these 2 miles of trails through rock formations are a great way to spend the day. Note this hike is challenging and best for older kids who are very steady on their feet.

9. Scusset Beach State Reservation - I have spent many summer days along this 1.5 mile stretch of beach and riding my bike along the canal.

10. Horseneck Beach State Reservation - This two-mile beach is one of the most popular beaches in Massachusetts. This is a beautiful beach to spend the day on.

With the summer weather coming I hope you get a chance to check out some of these great state parks close by.
