Did you know that Macaroni Kid is built upon 10 Core Values? As a Macaroni Kid Publisher, these values guide my actions and decisions. Each week for the next ten weeks I am going to break down one of the core values and share why it is important to me and my Macaroni Kid edition. I am also going to complete a video series which will go live every Wednesday evening so subscribe to our youtube channel and be the first to see each video.

The way of Macaroni Kid - Core Value #4 Put family first but don't lose sight of self
Seven years ago this week I left a job that I liked with people I loved to have my daughter. Having one parent stay at home is not the right decision for every family but as our family began my husband and I knew it was the right decision for us. But it doesn't mean it was easy. I love my kids with all of my being and I feel so blessed that I got the be the one there with them every day. I got to wake them up and put them to bed and we had the freedom to do story times, playdates and trips to the zoo. But even though I seemly had everything there was a huge hole inside of me. I remember feeling like all my hard work in school and my career was for nothing because now my existing was to feed children and pick up toys. I felt like my entire day was to moving clothes from the washer to the dryer to the drawers to bodies. I knew being home was the right decision for our family but some times I wondered if it was the right decision for me. I missed working in an office and completing projects. I missed thinking beyond the ABCs. I used the listen to the recordings of the Economist in the car because I couldn't handle one more Laurie Berkner song. Then I would feel guilty for not being grateful for all I had and got do with my kids, which would make me feel even worse about the whole thing.
Becoming a Macaroni Kid Publisher gave me back that sense of purpose and a self fulfillment that I had been looking for all with in the context of being with my family. I can still be there to drop off my kid at school or take them to dance class but last the same time I have professional goals that I am working towards. I have fellow publishers who I get to collaborate with on projects and goals. And although there are times when I feel like I am drowing in work and dreams and laundry I feel like a whole person again.
Macaroni Kid is all about family fun and kid things but it also gave me back a sense of self that had been missing for a long time. Yes there are days that it is tough and I let my kids play on their iPads so I can work. But now I feel like I am doing more in the world than just making sure my kids have clean clothes.
